I need your help ASAP!

I have had my puppy home now since she was 6 1/2 weeks old. She is 8 weeks today. I AM WHIPPED!!!! I don’t mind the training for “home etiquette” or planning for the destruction of something – but I have been unable to get her to
sleep all night once and I was on the verge of giving her back this morning. I’ve called my husband twice tearfully telling him I am weary and discouraged! (What a dummy to lay that on him when he’s working). This morning I called the folks I bought her from and was bawling like a baby, asking if they would take her back.

This afternoon it’s better. She’s a wonderful dog, and honestly – part of the reason I wanted her is because my
husband has never picked out a dog, and never had one since a puppy. He’s totally taken with her. But I have to make my mind up by tomorrow whether to keep her or not.

PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS – old ones, new ones, bizarre ones (well, not too bizarre) – PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR SUGGESTIONS. It’s been 12 years since I had a puppy, and a lot more than that since I had an infant at home.

Do you crate her? We crated our golden, starting the FIRST NIGHT we brought her home. When she started crying, we would tap on the crate and say, “QUIET!” Firmly…and with authority, but not in a scolding tone.

If she kept it up, we would rap on the the crate a bit harder and tell her, “QUIET!” again. We wouldn’t let her out unless we thought she had to go potty – and then we would carry her outside and tell her to go. If she didn’t within a reasonable time, we carried her back upstairs and right back into the crate.

She had a blanket and a few toys in there – for company.

It worked – though the first few weeks were hard. She goes right into her crate now and sleeps through the night. She’s one and a half now…but she was sleeping fine even at eight or nine weeks.

Thanks so much for your input. I guess so many nights without sleep just made me loopy! I had 3 children for heaven’s sake….I have my mind-set now – and GREAT information!

Oops, I didn’t know even puppies woke up in the nights. I had one, but he had absolutely no problems, slept through the night from day one. We didn’t have a crate, he slept right with me (he was missing his mommy, and he did want some body contact). However, it is not really a good or hygienic practice. But what did I care, I was just a kid totally in love with my god 🙂

I did give him a rubber bone to gnaw on, and I guess that kept him quiet during the nights.

I didn’t even realize I was so blessed.

However, do keep it up. Your puppy will soon settle in. All the best to you! And do post some photos of the puppy. I love puppy shots!

My Dakota is sleeping good now…I have let her cuddle with me a few times (so has my husband) – not hygenic – like you say, who cares! If we could see the foreign particles that land in our mouths and eye every day we’d be very concerned. 🙂 I will be putting puppy shots on soon. Have been so busy haven’t even posted for a few weeks! Thanks for sharing.

Am glad he is settling in now…no, I don’t have a dog any longer. My dog died when he was 8 years old because of chest congestion, and I never did have the heart to get another one again.

I am contemplating getting one from my daughter, as she seems to be very fond of dogs. I am thinking of getting her a pug 🙂
