“Researchers investigated the emotional differences between the two groups and found that when faced with risky decision-making, the amygdalae of Republicans fire at a greater rate than those of Democrats. This suggests that Republicans might be relatively more influenced by emotions in their decision-making process. What’s more, a study found that conservatives were aroused to a greater extent than liberals when shown disturbing images, such as those depicting infested wounds. Simply put, it appears that the conservative brain is more sensitive to stimuli that carry emotional weight.

Research shows that individuals who are more engaged in politics exhibit greater firing in the amygdala and ventral striatum while viewing statements consistent with their partisan ties. The amygdala is linked to emotional importance, while the ventral striatum is linked to reward value. Thus, political fanatics seem to find heightened intrinsic satisfaction to ideologies with which they agree.

These findings suggest that as we trudge deeper into the political world, we become more and more tied to our respective political parties. Scientists believe this may build a feedback loop that fuels polarization in the political world, motivating us to selectively seek out information that confirms our pre-existing beliefs. Even if we attempt to break from this self-perpetuating cycle, research also suggests underlying neural mechanisms that impede our capacity to empathize with members of the political out-group. It’s as if we are programmed in a way that is less than helpful for seeing alternative points of view.

Back in 1796, George Washington offered the nation some unheeded words of advice: beware of political parties.

Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think is a 1996 book by cognitive linguist George Lakoff. It argues that conservatives and liberals hold two different conceptual models of morality. Conservatives have a Strict father model in which people are made good through self-discipline and hard work, everyone is taken care of by taking care of themselves. Liberals have a nurturant parent model in which everyone is taken care of by helping each other.

Conservatives have more structured and persistent cognitive styles,” said Carola Salvi, lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow in cognitive psychology at Northwestern and RIC.

Liberals were more likely than conservatives to achieve solutions with a sudden insight or “Aha!” In contrast, both groups achieved roughly an equal number of solutions through gradual, analytical processing.”

Don’t Worry – Be Happy

I am so passionate about so many subjects, I barely know where to begin. Will anything I say matter? Will anything anyone does matter? Or will the power of the media sway all thinking so there is always racial division and concern about a presidency that has yet to begin.

Did your mama ever tell you “Stop worrying! Ninety nine percent of what you worry about will never come to fruition.” I have found that to be true over my lifetime! Such a small percentage, of EVEN LIFE-CHANGING events have had the power over me (and my choices in responding,) to take away a free and happy life.

Of course we all find mountains to climb, and sometimes we choose different paths of travel, but with the same goals in mind, do we not always have the choice to work together as best we can until we can work out a way to join paths and unite once again. I believe it is part of what makes us human – the willingness to PEACEFULLY be able to “make things work.”

Life is a teacher to unwilling students.

God forbid I would discourage anyone – that is not what I was born for – but honestly, I spent so much of my life “worrying” about so many things, I find it amazing that I have done as much as I have done in my life! In the state of “worry”, there is (as Churchill said) “Nothing to fear but fear itself!

Don’t get lost in your own rhetoric… if you do you will loose the value of each moment we have = and the moments are all we have! I guarantee that. I had ten years or more stolen from me in a moment. I am grateful I had lived my life thus far, as I chose. Now it is doing the best that I can in a limited world I had not known.

Please do not forget now. Nothing has happened yet. Likely-and I wish I were 20 – NOTHING will…We still must move onward and upward.

Of course most people think Michelle Obama is wonderful.  I thought she gave a good speech (as did the president – though it was mostly about him).  The one thing I question in her speech was instead of pulling us all together, I think she perhaps put another little “divider” into the speech by saying, “I have two beautiful BLACK daughters.”  I believe we are all intelligent enough that we have noticed.  Would it not have been better just to say, “I have two beautiful daughters.”  I have a beautiful daughter too, but I don’t think I have ever mentioned in a gathering that she is a beautiful white daughter……maybe I am color blind, and just go by hearts.

 

 

 

Inaugration , money, poverty and hope

Since the inauguration is today, I thought I would bring up a few controversial things to ponder.  First let me say that I did relax all day and all evening, said prayers, enjoyed the beautiful day, and regenerated as best I can with this compressed fracture in my back.  Here goes:

1.  Many people I know swear they won’t vote next year as the election was decided even before anyone west of the middle of the USA got to have a vote counted…the electoral system.

2.  I don’t know why all the inaugural fuss – obama has never stopped being president!  Why not just donate the (minimum estimate) of thirteen million, six-hundred and seventy-five dollars to the Red Cross.  Why actually we could not send Egypt the billion plus in “aid” and perhaps do some of form of REAL help for the working people, and for people around the globe!

3.  Perhaps a twenty million dollar vacation to Oahu is a bit pricy considering Michelle alone spent ten million on vacations, and the president took forty-seven vacation days last year (those costs not included).

Come on, it really is a travesty when I can drive to town and see people with signs on every corner, and a few days ago, this woman.

Now perhaps would be a good time to take a breath, say prayers of gratitude for all the small blessings as well as the large ones, and send a prayer to all those in need.

Now I offer two flowers for you to remember we always have hope and perhaps “the spring” of a new time will come upon us.

State of the Union

“Oh once in a while I see a homeless person on the corner.  It’s so sad”, I’d say.  I would say a prayer, donate what I could, fix a lunch to take to them, or share water with them on a hot day.

Now it’s become common to have them on every other corner, and all ages.  Something has to change here in the USA.

Is this the State of the Union for the future of our children?

Occupy What? Gas prices?

Occupy what? It’s one of those times when I awake that I must sit and write.
I don’t understand the occupy movement. I know youth is full vibrant, and full of
hope and dreams…I understand that. I still have dreams.

But I see no great help from the occupy movement. I wonder who has the time to sit and camp and make a bad reputation for the entire movement.

I wonder what they are accomplishing except a further division between people of the USA. The program now, if you aren’t aware of it, is to divide and separate the people of the USA. Technology is a vast part of this movement, though I love the use of technology in the positive way, and I felt lost the last 10 days with no access to the internet, and limited “connections”.

Would someone please tell my why the violence in the occupy movements; why the rapes and disheveled attitudes of the people in general.

Why are they there? They are but pawns in this movement to control the people. The media is there to tear out the worst of it and, as they do, point out all the lies and negativity of everything!

Next. I dreamed of a nuclear reactior sitting in the middle of the small town, surrounded by the village and mountains. No one seemed to notice.
I was sickened.

When I noted to everyone it was there, it was obvious they had chosen to ignore it. They were given whatever they wanted to shut them up, and then they could go on living as they chose.

When I have soil in my yard I plant vegetables and flowers and trees. I clean up the area. I use it to partake of nature and keep it harm free. The dream was a nightmare.

For the energy provided, are those fifteen (I think) new reactors to be built worth the risk? Ask the Japanese people.

I don’t understand why we can’t use our resources and oil and keep the price of gas down so the downtrodden citizens (and we are) can afford to live…
if not barely!

I don’t give a crap about politics. It’s all a lie for power and money. Don’t you think you’d vote for the candidate who spent his millions on the poor, the Red Cross, and to help others? I would. But it’s never going to happen.

We’ve been duped. We are being torn apart on grounds of culture, sexual preferences, religion, and world trade. A house divided – falls.

Pray (whatever spiritual path you follow). Love one another. Do what you can that MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Take time to sign a petition, if it is valid. Stop wasting hours on useless places on the internet. Do something.
Play with a child. Work hard, or look for work, hard. Don’t give up, but don’t give in.

I’ve lived a large portion of my life, but I will never give up hope and faith.
Do what you know to be right in your heart. Pull together as a people in the secret of keeping your thoughts and actions worthy. You will know a brother or a sister. Bond in ways that will hold the fabric of YOUR lives together – if not for you – for the children.

Try to “get it” – we are on the precipice of Mad Max, and in the center of Big Brother. If you don’t know what I mean, if you can’t relate, ask someone.

God bless you all. I just returned from a 10 day trip to see my husband and welcome my new grandson. I have to catch up, so if there are errors, I will correct later….was just impelled to write this…and these days, I listen to that inner voice EVERY time. Much love to my human brothers and sisters. California Governor’s Election…

DO NOT VOTE for Jerry Brown (that is my opinion). If you are not old enough to remember his last stint as governor of California – I will tell you I am. Remember, I am not Republican or Democrat – I simply KNOW from seeing the horror that was Jerry Brown the first time he was governor. For eight years he lied. He was a TERRIBLE governor – and the people paid – literally! That is all I have to say about that.

As I’ve said before I am a political atheist. Yes, I do vote, but I reiterated, I am not affiliated with a particular party. It really makes me mad that the president of ALL citizens (Republican, Democrat, or whatever), is spending taxpayers dollars to promote the Democrat party. That to me is really not right. Does anybody out there have any idea of the cost to the taxpayers?

Big brother doesn’t have to knock – he’s already “in the house”. There was a teamster work building a stage for an obama rally, who was wearing a Bush hat and tee shirt, when he was told: Turn the tee shirt inside out and take off the hat….he didn’t, and was fired!

He does not blame the obama team (to be clear) – but the teamsters! Ironically, the “Bush” that was represented was the aircraft carrier that his son has been deployed on for three individual tours-I am not certain where, so I won’t presume to say, but I did hear the man tell the story himself, so I know it is true.

I heard these words on a television show (Channel 10), as I was looking for mindless humor to watch: something about a woman, a guy said “…..you have to kiss a pussy’s ass”.” I am sorry, but this is regular tv at 9:50PM . I am angry that crap like that is on all the time now. I am not big brother (or sister), but have we, as a people, forgotten who we are and decent words and behavior?
Silly question. Sickens me though.

Ridiculous things and Good things

I find it ridiculous that our president says things like “I’m ready to kick some ass”, “plug the damn hole”, OR “Ride the herd on BP. Oh I know, he’s “gettin'” down to the peasant level ’cause we’re all pissed! Think he’s ever kicked anybody’s ass or been on a cattle drive?

Also loved it when he said, “This situation is unsustainable. Israel should find another way; Israel needs a better approach to the three year blockade.” (I think this strife between Palestine and Israel has been going on for decade upon decade upon decade…still going on. Then he gave another $400 million in US Aid to Gaza (Isn’t Gaza under Hamas control?). Where does all this money the government is spending come from if we are so far in depth our grandchildren and their children won’t be able to see clearly!

It’s ridiculous that the Catholic Church is going to pay a convicted pedophile $90,000.00 retirement.

Also kind of ridiculous politicians can buy elections. Meg Whitman has already spent $70-91 million dollars of her own money to get the governor’s election won. This election for California’s governor is predicted to be the most expensive one ever.

Next little bitch? The FDA is reviewing a little pill similar to Viagra, only for women. It’s called Flibanserin. The problem? Even the scientists admit they don’t know what is “average” in the sexual drive for women. I heard a physician on a news case how awful it is that pills and “disorders and diseases” are created purely from greed! She said, “What’s the matter with a glass of wine, or a massage?”

Now to the good stuff……..personally, my kids are healthy. Stars still shine and as the earth turns the world is still warmed by the sun. I can still hear kids laughing and see the lovely innocence and truth in their eyes and spirits. Shhhh. Don’t let the younger ones know the turmoil we face.

It’s summer again and that means lots of watermelons available! My husband and my puppy love me even if I am “off the wall” at times! How great is that!

My son and his new wife sent photos of their Sahara Desert Wedding….everything fit beautifully!

And I have the ability and access to write to my heart’s content and make friends via the internet all around the world! I still know God is there and and whatever the horror of the world seems to be now…..this is just a classroom and the best is yet to come!

CREATE a wonderful morning, afternoon, or evening. It is a choice!

Prison

I am remembering after I write to “Relax, it’s just life!”. It does take practice to do so.

I have been doing my homework on something I’d like to share.

First – keep in mind that our senior citizens got no cost of living raise this year. Also a payment is taken out of their monthly social security to pay for a portion of what is covered.
Dental and glasses are not covered.

Now to my major bitch for the day. It really irritates me and is totally ridiculous. Before many people are put into our prisons they hear the phrase, “If you can’t afford an attorney one will be provided for you….” Who do you think pays for these attorneys? Taxpayers.

Our prison system sucks!
Check this out:
1. USA and territories had an incarcerated population of 2,424,279 inmates in 2008 ( two years ago).

There are conflicting numbers on different websites, but an average of almost one hundred and fifty BILLION dollars a year is spent on inmates.

The breakdown is 80% security and MEDICAL (which of course includes regular checkups, dental, vision and surgeries). The remaining 20% is spent on food, clothing, EDUCATION, and administrative issues. Pissed yet?

It costs more to house a “lifer” than a regularly sentenced inmate. We have over 2,270 lifers who were incarcerated as CHILDREN. California alone has almost 700 lifers in prison.

It costs a billion dollars a year to pay for inmates incarcerated on “pot” charges! There are over a million non-violent prisoners – but somehow pedophiles seem to slip between the cracks and get released on a regular basis. Perhaps that’s because prison can be a “living hell” for them as many inmates are parents. Poor pedophiles!

Between 2001 – 2004 the cost of housing illegal immigrants in our prisons was 5.8 BILLION dollars!

Now considering these statistics I have two questions for you.
1. Would you like to pay for a life-time sentence for the woman who just slit and killed her daughter and nearly killed another one? She could get an education, dental work and new eyeglasses.
2. Do you want to pay for illegal immigrants who are incarcerated? They too would get full medical benefits and of course dental, an education…and whoops, I forgot, clothing and food and a place to stay.

My answers are a resounding NO to both. I believe our prison system is breaking us and there is absolute proof that “rehabilitating” our prisoners DOES NOT WORK for the vast majority. There is a 99% probability that a pedophile will repeat his or her offense again and again. As far as other
violations….proven fact the majority repeat crimes – and oftentimes plan them while in prison.

I know a boy who is spending his life in prison (for murder). Incarcerated at 18. His mother told me he reiterated that he’s never gotten such good drugs as he has since he’s been in prison.

Have you seen any of the television interviews with prison “stars”? Manson’s had a few; so has John Gotti, Jr.- actually there are lots of television shows and movies that make prison life seem like a way for offenders to get famous.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THOSE IN CHARGE? Oh, I forgot, it’s a different day – same politics! As a famous television commentator says, “GIVE ME A BREAK!”

Time for me to take the dog for a walk and breathe!
